Change your mindset, change your life
Nothing changes if nothing changes
Whether you would like to start a new business, work towards a promotion in your career, make a decision to eat healthily, get fit, address the balance in your life or leave a relationship that no longer serves you, making changes in your life and being consistent with these changes takes mental strength and courage.
I believe the key is having a positive growth mindset.
Most people will tell you that they don’t just dislike change, they hate change. Isn’t it so much easier when things stay the same? We don’t like change because we fear what will happen or what won’t happen. The feeling that we might fail or not knowing how things will turn out keeps us stuck where we are and we end up giving up on our dreams of creating our happiest life and being the person we always dreamed of.
The majority of people will start a healthy regime or a new business but end up giving up on their goals because they lose faith when they don’t see immediate results and it’s hard to stay consistent. Staying in our comfort zone feels easy and familiar. It’s so much easier to give up but when we go backwards, we end up feeling frustrated and depressed because we’re not where we really want to be.
What if you could make a consistent change to your mindset and achieve your goals? How amazing would it be if you could make that change or create the balance in your life that you desire?
Changing your mindset is not easy and it takes a lot of practice and hard work.
After the menopause, what was left of my waist disappeared and suddenly without changing my eating habits I gained weight. I knew then that I would need to make ‘good health’ my priority, as heart disease is on both sides of my family. I have always been aware of the necessity to exercise regularly and monitor my cholesterol. When I was younger I dieted for vanity reasons but as I have got older, my focus has become centred around creating balance and being the healthiest version of myself.
At this time, I made the decision to exercise the most important muscle in my body, my heart, by taking regular walks. I also chose to go to Yoga classes as this is an exercise modality that appeals to me.
I needed to lose weight but the mere mention of the word diet brings up a lot of negative feelings; ‘diets don’t work, don’t diet just eat healthily, diets are the worst thing you can do etc. etc.’ So how do you really lose weight unless you eat less? It’s actually not possible. So if the diets don’t work, what does? I resisted dieting to begin with, and focussed on eating healthily.
The global weight loss industry is probably the biggest industry in the world valued at $175.44 billion in 2022 and the information you can glean from the internet is polarising.
There is just so much conflicting information out there and trying to make sense of it is confusing; exercise, you don’t need to exercise to lose weight, drink water, drink Apple Cider Vinegar, cut out carbohydrates, cut out junk food, cut out processed food, intermittent fast, eat for your blood group type, find out what your allergic to, don’t eat certain foods together, follow a calorie controlled diet, don’t follow a calorie controlled diet, drink lemon and ginger in the morning or evenings to burn belly fat, don’t work out too much, do interval training, the list goes on and on and it is literally mind-boggling.
Addressing the weight loss, I decided what I needed to do was to tackle my mindset because as most people who have decided to get healthy and lose weight know, you need to be in the right mindset to begin with. It takes time to summon up the energy to get into the mindset to restrict yourself from your favourite foods, weigh foods, buy different foods etc.
I decided that I needed to make a lifestyle change by eating less, tracking what I was eating and becoming mindful of the foods that I was eating, realising that the key to long term success is consistency.
Like anything challenging, there are no easy fixes. I made the decision to not return to old patterns of behaviour and old ways of thinking. Any changes you decide to make take focus, consistency, will-power, determination and a commitment to yourself to achieve. Once you decide to invest in yourself, the hard work actually becomes enjoyable and the results even more so.
With practice we can become aware of our shortcomings and recognise when we feel guided to make adjustments to ourselves and to our lifestyle by restricting ourselves. It is like any muscle that we work on in our body, if we are consistent, we can build mental strength.
If you want to make changes in your life, you need to be prepared to change your mind because only by being consistent will the changes that you make endure.
